Osteoarthritis Hub
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of arthritis in the UK, but its impact is often overlooked. Commonly referred to as ‘wear and tear’, it is actually more complicated. It reflects an imbalance between the ‘wear and repair’ of tissues such as bone, cartilage, synovium, ligaments, tendons, and muscles, which all constantly respond to stress and damage. Lifestyle modifications can reduce the wear on joints and help joints to repair, which reduces pain and improves function and mobility.
The hub offers a 30-minute module which covers the pathogenesis and management of OA, including diagnosis, appropriate self-management, prescription of analgesia and referral. A 25-minute podcast discusses how to diagnose and manage the condition in primary care, as well as what can be done to help patients have been diagnosed and useful resources available to support them.
This five minutes to ‘Change your Practice’ screencast looks at how to identify and diagnose osteoarthritis (OA). The screencast will help GPs with key takeaway points on OA to implement in their practice. It can be viewed as a standalone bite-sized learning, or can be completed alongside the eLearning module and podcast.
