Current legislation says that once a prescribed medicine has been issued to a patient it is for their use only – it cannot be used for another patient and if returned to a pharmacy it must be destroyed. This runs the risk of wastage of end of life medicines which are often prescribed on a ‘just in case’ basis. This short module discusses the medicines re-use scheme which allows for the re-use of certain medicines in care homes or hospices, if there is a shortage and re-use is in a patient’s best interests.
