Welcome to the Patient Online Practice Toolkit

The latest resources for GPs and other healthcare professionals on patient online access.

    What is Patient Online?

Patient Online gives patients the option to make appointments, order repeat prescriptions and view their GPs’ medical record online, using their computer, tablet or smartphone. It complements the existing ways patients access appointments, prescriptions and their records.

Patients appreciate the ease and convenience and record access helps them them to be better informed about their health and better able to self manage long term conditions.

The GMS and PMS contracts required practices to promote and offer online access to the coded data in their health record and in 2016/17 there are non-contractual changes that call for practice to provide patients with online access to clinical correspondence such as discharge summaries, outpatient appointment letters, and referral letters.

More information about these changes is available in the Overview and Benefits eLearning, and the BMA Key changes to the GP contract webpage.

Click for Online services: an overview of online access (PDF) which provides guidance on the important features of online access.

    About the Toolkit

RCGP and NHS England have worked together to provide a range of resources and practical guidance to help GP practices make online appointments, repeat prescriptions and make records available online to all patients who want to use them.

There is guidance on how to register new applicants for online access, safeguarding, data quality, information governance and how record access supports patient centred care, improving health literacy and helping patients and the practice manage multimorbidity.

Please use the tabs above to access the latest themed guidance, forms and checklists. Use the navigation to the right to access eLearning and further information.

    Clinical systems suppliers

As part of the GPSoC requirement, GP clinical systems will be upgraded to support Patient Online services during 2014/15.
