The environmental benefits of social prescribing

Social prescribing enables healthcare professionals to refer to a range of local, non-clinical services. Nature based prescribing is the practice of supporting people to engage in nature-based interventions and activities to improve mental and physical health. It is often further sub-divided into green or blue prescribing. Activities usually involve contact with other people e.g. walking groups rather than just encouraging someone to go for a walk on their own; there is evidence for an associated reduction in loneliness. This course defines nature based and green social prescribing. It provides the evidence base for health benefits of this form of social prescribing and raises awareness of the potential opportunities for nature based and green social prescribing within primary care. This course falls within the Population Health curriculum field.
