Inflammatory arthritis is usually managed in secondary care, but it is important that we spot it early when a patient presents with joint pain; a delay in starting definitive disease-modifying therapy can have significant consequences for long-term pain and function. The RCGP rheumatoid arthritis hub has a variety of resources, including an eLearning module entitled inflammatory arthritis and COVID-19; much of the content of this course remains relevant, as it discusses the diagnostic process, monitoring of disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs), and the holistic care of patients with inflammatory arthritis. A second eLearning module discusses inflammatory arthritis outside of the context of the pandemic, using a case study approach to guide logical assessment and referral.

The hub also contains two short screencasts, one on safe DMARD prescribing and one on safe remote assessment of patients with MSK conditions – remote assessment is likely to remain in some situations and so this is a useful skill to have. There is also a podcast which gives more information on holistic care for patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and a series of reflective questions to help to capture your views on the management of this cohort of patients.
