Shielding is a public health measure announced at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. It aims to protect those deemed clinically extremely vulnerable (CEV) who are at the highest risk of morbidity and mortality from COVID-19. As the pandemic progressed and more information was available, a risk prediction model called QCovid® was developed and that has now been used to systematically risk assess the adult population. Those who are in approximately the top 2% for risk of catching COVID-19 and dying have been added to the CEV list and should be prioritised for vaccination. This module discusses the principles and practicalities of shielding as well as what GPs should do if approached by patients with questions, or with requests for letters for employers.
