LGBT Health Hub
The 2018 National LGBT survey found that LGBT people are generally more dissatisfied with health services, compared to those who are not LGBT. We cannot control problems such as long waiting lists for mental health and gender identity clinics, but we can look at how welcoming our practices are to people who are LGBT, how well informed we are about issues that affect this population, and the language that we use.
This hub contains a collection of eLearning courses specifically related to LGBT issues. These discuss inequality in LGBT health, creating an inclusive primary care environment, mental health and suicide prevention, screening issues in the LGBT population, the older LGBT patient and sexual and reproductive needs of the LGBT community.
The hub also contains two podcasts which go into more detail about being an inclusive practice and issues around sharing and disclosure, including why some patients might not feel comfortable about sharing their status. Legal issues and communication with secondary care are also discussed. Finally, there is a short screencast about the use of inclusive language.

In July 2017, the Government Equalities Office launched a national survey of LGBT people which was open to anyone who identified as having a minority sexual orientation, gender identity or had variations in sex characteristics. It asked questions about people’s experiences of living in the UK and in accessing public services and received more than 108,000 responses, an unprecedented number.
The survey highlighted that LGBT people’s experience of healthcare in the UK is often not as good as those who are not from the LGBT community. This is often caused by the lack of knowledge of healthcare providers of the specific health needs of their LGBT patients.
This collection of eLearning modules, podcasts and screencasts aims to inform and update all members of the general practice team on particularly important aspects of primary care for LGBT people, to improve both experience and outcomes for our patients. It was produced with the help of a grant by the Government Equalities Office and with the guidance of the RCGP’s LGBT+ steering group.
We encourage you to undertake all six modules, after which you can complete the LGBT Health post-learning assessment section at the bottom of the hub so we can evaluate the impact of these resources.
The LGBT Health Hub is free to access when you register for an RCGP account.
