Measles is one of the most transmissible infectious diseases. It can lead to serious and potentially life-threatening complications in some people. Recent years have seen outbreaks in countries in which the disease was thought to be eliminated. The World Health Organisation in Europe warned recently that in some parts of the UK there has been an increase in the number of measles cases. In August 2023, the United Kingdom’s Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reported a steep increase in laboratory-confirmed measles cases in England, with the majority of cases in London. 80% of these cases were due to community transmission, while 20% of cases related to cases acquired abroad.
